What is a TV Short Series?

Watching an episode in two minutes, finishing a TV series in 60 minutes is becoming the new trend. Short dramas with their compact plots and strong atmosphere quickly capture the audience's emotions in just a few minutes, effectively hitting the audience's "enjoyment" points. These series emerged as a significant trend in China and quickly expanded overseas, capturing the attention of global audiences.

The micro-dramas or short dramas, are vertical, smartphone-optimized 60-80 episodes lasting only a few minutes each with quick, engaging content.

Typically, users can watch the first 10 episodes for free and pay for the subsequent episodes: single-episode payments, subscription memberships, and advertising revenue.

The viewers demand “bite-sized” entertainment and are now watching video content during short breaks or while commuting. These patterns are being driven by accessible and engaging content on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Kristina's Debut in TV Short Series

Kristina Pakhomova, the founder of KrisP.Production, recently starred in her first short TV series, "Cleaning Lady is CEO," directed by Mauricio Osaki. Mauricio, known for his Berlin Festival-winning film "My Father's Truck".

Kristina shared her experience, saying, "It was my first experience starring in a short TV series. I’ve known Mauricio for a while since we were students, so I  joined his team out of curiosity.  The filming was very intense, with a primitive plot and a lot of drama, fights, and at times illogical over the top dialogue, but we had a lot of fun.

The series was filmed with five vertical cameras, allowing for quick and efficient production. The younger generation doesn't even want to turn the phones upside down, so everything was shot vertically for convenience."

Trends and Popular Plots

The love and social stories are universally popular, especially plots involving CEOs, love struggles, and conflicts between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. However, users in different regions have varying preferences in genres.

So in Southeast Asia male-oriented genres like warriors, historical time travel  have a significant market. Conversely, these genres struggle to gain traction in western markets.

In Europe and the United States, viewers prefer female-oriented virally themes such as sweet romance, tragic love, or love stories with billionaires, usually with high-drama, or high-visual-impact themes like werewolves, vampires, etc.

The future of the global micro short drama market looks promising. According to Lucintel forecasts, the global micro short drama market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% from 2024 to 2030.

“With the rise of TV short series I see the benefits for industry: a number of directors, writers, actresses, and actors have a chance to participate in and prepare themselves for the big projects by producing mini-dramas. Also I hope with the growing interest in this format, the quality of short TV series will improve as well” - Kristina added.
